FIRED-uP focused on innovation as a way of improving the environmental performance of fire service fleets. London Fire Brigade and the City of Ghent, Belgium cooperated in this three-year project which started in June 2012. It was co-financed under the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme of the European Union.
The project:
Outputs took the form of guidance on market engagement, a survey of innovations and good practice, models for assessing the environmental impact of fire service vehicles and procurement. Regular communication and an interim and final conference spread these results amongst fire and emergency services, public sector procurers, suppliers and other stakeholders.

LFB has established two framework agreements which can be used by any fire service in Europe or other bodies purchasing on their behalf. The frameworks cover the development, supply and installation of telematics and RFID tagging equipment, and associated software.
These frameworks will remain in place until November 2018 and include fixed pricing (with allowance for inflation) for a number of products and services.

City of Ghent and the Ghent Fire Brigade have established a framework contract for a multifunctional second line fire vehicle which improves efficiency and reduces the environmental footprint of transport for daily logistics. The framework allows fire brigades and logistic operators in Europe to buy this innovation and to assemble it to their needs.

The final conference for the FIRED-uP project was held in London on 7-8 July. The project has focused on procuring innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of fire-fighting vehicles, especially in terms of emissions, fuel and water consumption.
Project partners London Fire Brigade and the City and Fire Brigade of Ghent, Belgium conducted background research and market consultations before piloting new systems to reduce the footprint of their vehicles. In London’s case, this meant collecting data on how vehicles and equipment are used to enable more efficient management of the fleet. These technologies are now available to fire and rescue services throughout Europe through the establishment of framework agreements. Ghent worked with an SME to design and prototype a support vehicle with CNG engine and energy-efficient hydraulic crane.
The final event was attended by about 60 representatives from other brigades, the European Commission and the suppliers appointed to develop the systems.
