Current Projects 2012 - 2013

Strategic Studies

Most of the major London transport routes in West London provide for radial movements to and from central London. However, in contrast, orbital movements are generally poorly served. This has the effect of reducing not only the opportunities for longer-distance orbital movements across the sub-region but also the locally focussed journeys to town centres and employment centres from non-radial directions.
A

s identified in the West London Sub-Regional Transport Plan (WLSRTP), one of the five key challenges for the west is to improve north-south connectivity.
Transport for London (TfL), working alongside WestTrans set out to identify the connectivity challenges within and to/from the region. TfL identified seven 'select' corridors which currently underperform in terms of:

  • DemandCorridor 3 image
  • Public transport versus highway journey time;
  • Population/employment growth
  • Rail Crowding and
  • Highway congestion

The seven corridors identified are:

  • Corridor 1 - Heathrow to Uxbridge
  • Corridor 2 - Heathrow to Kingston
  • Corridor 3 - Heathrow to Harrow
  • Corridor 4 - Hounslow to Kingston
  • Corridor 5 - Wembley to Ealing
  • Corridor 6 - Ealing to Brent Cross
  • Corridor 7 - White City to Clapham Junction

A study has been undertaken for each corridor to identify a prioritised and costed package of transport improvements, which respond to short, medium and long term problems, present and future growth, and proposed regeneration within the sub-region. Reports for each corridor are available by clicking on the links below

Cycling

Cycling in West London: Strategic Scoping Study

As part of its commitment to improving Transport and Travel within the sub region, the WestTrans Partnership is undertake a scoping study that has two primary stages:

  1. To define the current position of cycling within the West London (WL) sub region and to investigate and present the potential for growth.
  2. To formulate a list of between 10-12 strategic cycling corridor suggestions with supportive headline business cases for each route.
This document provides details of the background to the project and identifies the key objectives to be considered when preparing proposals.

Biking Boroughs

Since 2010, WestTrans has supported Brent, Ealing, Hillingdon and Hounslow in the development of 'cycling hubs' in each area.

Brompton Dock

Ealing Council launched it's new Brompton Dock Station and Bike Hub at Haven Green on 20th July 2012. Similar facilities are soon to be launched in Hounslow and Brent.

London Councils Bus Network Review
The aim of the review is to determine what concerns regarding the bus network are shared among boroughs/sub regions to arrive at a shared understanding of the key issues with London's bus network. More Info (.pdf, 41Kb)

Smarter Travel

Promoting sustainable travel is at the core of WestTrans' activities, and the WestTrans team and their partners committed to funding tried and tested initiatives that delivered behaviour change, as well as investigating and nurturing new and innovative approaches.

Development Control Travel Planning and Monitoring
The WestTrans team worked closely with Transport Planners and Planning Officers at all six West London boroughs to ensure that the way in which the Travel Plans are secured, written and monitored promotes sustained and measurable behaviour change within the organisation.

Supporting Initiatives
During 2012/13 WestTrans continues its work with organisations in West London who were developing and implementing a voluntary Travel Plan to reduce the carbon impact of its employees' travel or the congestion generated by their workplace. More InformationDr Bike Sign Image

Networks
WestTrans continued to actively support sector based networks such as the NHS, Faith Groups and the Higher and Further Education Sector as well as a number of business groups including;

West London Air Quality Cluster Group

The West London Air Quality Group is made up of the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames and has been in existence since 1996.

Air pollution does not respect borough boundaries and London Boroughs by their nature are small in area, therefore the effective options related to individual Borough activity are limited. All West London Councils have agreed to work in partnership with each other to seek joint solutions to air pollution problems. Each member borough has declared Air Quality Management Areas, and meet regularly to discuss common air quality issues, shared experiences and best practice in carrying out their duties locally under the Environmental Protection Act 1995.

In 2002 the West London Alliance Directors adopted the West London Air Quality Strategy and this has since evolved into the West London Revised Air Quality Strategic Plan 2006-2011
