The purpose of social work is to enable children, adults, families and communities to function, participate and develop in society. Social workers practise in a society of complexity, change and diversity, and the majority of people to whom they provide services, are among the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers are employed by a range of statutory, voluntary and private organisations, and work multidisciplinary with colleagues from connected professions and departments, such as education, health, housing, welfare and criminal justice provision.

Social workers are expected to provide high quality services which amongst other things depends on the availability of a qualitative good workforce training programme and the ability to apply learned knowledge into practice.

Regardless which setting,  a Social worker has the clear responsibility to continuously update their knowledge and skills and should link training and development to career opportunities and progression.
