Continued Professional Development

Organisations continuously striving to improve their services to children's and adults. Pivotal to positive outcomes for service users is the support social care staff receives to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Research shows that organisations who are supporting social workers have the best staff retention rates. The employer's standards and supervision promote supervision, appraisal and personal development plans and has been introduced by most of the authorities across England and also the West London partnership

Additionally, registered social workers need to remind themselves of their responsibility to maintain and develop their specialist skills, knowledge, expertise and confidence in the interests of good practice for service users and carers.

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) define CPD as:

"a range of learning activities through which health and care professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice".

A minority of registered social workers will be asked by the HCPC to evidence their professional development when registering or re registering.  Furthermore social workers are encouraged to improve the profession by contributing to new knowledge and seeking out ways to develop theory and evidence-informed practice.

Thus, if social workers want to improve their capabilities, personal confidence and direction for practice and careers it is vital to attend CPD activities
